Antonia Showering
B. 1991, LONDON, UK
Antonia Showering renders emotionally charged landscapes capturing the shifting nature of memory and the complexities of her Swiss-Chinese heritage. She is known for her richly layered depictions of family members in landscape settings, deployed in warm, velvety washes of red, orange and green. While Showering’s use of place recalls the West, the yellow ochres and earth-toned shades used to render them evoke the East. The artist relates her engagement with nostalgia to a search for home, using colour to explore the complexities of belonging, while her subjects remain constant. Ambiguous yet psychologically charged, Showering’s paintings err between the abstract and the allegorical.
