Thomas Lumley

B. 1980, Aberdyfi, Wales, UK

Thomas Lumley was born and brought up in Yorkshire. He studied at the Charles H Cecil Studios in Florence between 1999-2003. Thereafter, he undertook commisioned work, largely in portraiture.

Thomas Lumley’s series from studies of tree trunks show detailed close ups  of bark using charcoal to create dramatic chiaro scuro for one to pick up  the textural harshness of his subject. The results of his work are a beautiful synthesis between movement and depth, nature and form. While the  monochrome medium picks up on harsh angularity it juxtaposes the natural elements of shapely clusters where one can pick up on the vast forms that nature creates. the result expels a sense of musicality as the barks oscillates and delicately grows around itself in an incredible dance. The singularity of his work is eminent, no two pieces are the same and each piece has it’s own sense of self.
