Wilhelm Sasnal
B. 1972, TARNÓW, POLAND
Wilhelm Sasnal has emerged over the last two decades as one of Europe’s most distinguished contemporary painters. Sasnal’s works are characterized by their vast visual sources, ranging from the artist’s everyday snapshots to his personal archive of appropriated images drawn from magazines, newspapers, and online, which undergo various levels of distortion, simplification, or abstraction. His work often focuses on weighty historical themes such as the Holocaust, or familiar pop-cultural icons, as well as the people, places, and objects around him, indexing an artistic document of post-Communist Poland during a time of socio-political transformation.
